Game on

West Side Little League's 11/12s and 9/10s have begun District 23 Little League Tournament play. 11s play on July 16, at 11:00am against Kingsbridge.

Results of the opening tournament games for 11/12s and 9/10s:

11/12s (Majors): (0-1)

WS suffered a deflating loss in its opener on Saturday to a solid Kingsbridge team -- in a game that should have been closer, but ended after five by mercy rule. The squad regroups for its next game - rescheduled due to a rainout of Monday's games this week to Tuesday, July 6, against Peter Stuyvesant at 5:30 pm - field tba but we believe the game will be played at Inwood field #6 (in Inwood Hill Park, adjacent to Columbia University's Baker Field. Take the #1 train to 215th Street or A train to 208th, entrance to Inwood Hill Park is on 218th Street, two blocks west of Broadway, 1 block west of Seaman Avenue) Directions by car below.

9/10s: (1-0)

WS 9/10s defeated a tough, well-coached Stuyvesant team Sunday in their opening round. After surrendering three runs in the top of the first, West Side's pitching - starter Charlie Thau, reliever Noah Mathews (12 pitch 5th) and closer Thomas Luke Guest (10 pitch 6th) - and a strong defensive effort in the field shut down Stuyvesant over the final five frames. Meanwhile, West Side battled back from an initial 3-0 deficit over the course of a long and hot afternoon, getting on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first on an inside-the-park home run, tying the game in the bottom of the fourth, and scoring the winning run in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the sixth on a clutch single to right with runners standing on second and third (after a double steal). Final: West Side 4, Stuyvesant 3.

9/10s next play the winner of tomorrow night's Kingsbridge/ Downtown LL game on Thursday, July 7th at 5:30 pm at Kingsbridge's Cooney Grauer field. 233rd Street & Bailey Avenue in the Bronx (Take the #1 train to 231st Street, then the BX10 bus EAST from 231st & Broadway to 233rd & Bailey. Or walk EAST from Broadway & 231st two blocks to Bailey Avenue, then walk north two blocks to 233rd Street) Directions by car below.

11s:

11s will be attending a warm-up tournament out on Long Island (Ronkonkoma) July 4th weekend prior to beginning their LL tournament play on July 16, at 11:00am against Kingsbridge at Inwood field #6.
