Summer solstice news

SUMMER TOURNAMENT TEAMS

West Side Little League is fielding three Little League tournament baseball teams this summer. The 11/12s and 9/10s each won their tune-up games under the lights against Staten Island's East Shore LL tournament team - the 11/12s on Saturday evening and the 9/10s on Wednesday evening. Final scores: Saturday (11/12s) West Side 9, East Shore 7. Tuesday (9/10s) West Side 11, East Shore 4.

The first games of the LL tournament are as follows:

11/12s (Majors):

Saturday, June 25 11:00am - WS plays Kingsbridge LL up at Inwood's field #6 ( in Inwood Hill Park, at 218th Street, adjacent to Columbia's Baker Field - Directions below) - WS's next game would be Monday, June 27 or Tuesday, June 28, depending on the outcome of this contest. If WS wins the first game, they will play Felix Millan LL on Monday at 5:30pm at Kingsbridge's Cooney Grauer field, at 233rd Street & Bailey Avenue in the Bronx. If WS loses to Kingsbridge in their opener on Saturday, they play either Inwood or Peter Stuyvesant LL at Inwood's field #6 on Tuesday at 5:30pm.

9/10s:

Sunday, June 26 12:00 noon - WS plays Peter Stuyvesant LL at Stuyvesant's fields at East 16th - Avenues C to D - next game would be July 7.

11s will be attending a tourney out on Long Island in Ronkonkoma the July 4th weekend preliminary to beginning their LL tournament play on July 16, at 11:00am against Kingsbridge at Inwood LL's Field #6

Directions to Inwood Field #6:

By car -- approximate driving time from 96th and B'way = 20 minutes.
Finding a parking space = an additional 20 minutes.

HENRY HUDSON PARKWAY NORTH
Take the DYCKMAN STREET EXIT (last exit before Henry Hudson Bridge Toll)
Approximately 100 yards after exiting, TURN LEFT at the first traffic
light onto HENSHAW STREET
At the end of Henshaw Street (a very short block), make a RIGHT TURN
onto DYKMAN STREET
Go the 2nd traffic light, make a LEFT TURN onto SEAMAN AVENUE
Take SEAMAN AVENUE until it ends at 218TH STREET (at this point you
should see Columbia University's football field straight ahead)
Make a LEFT TURN onto 218TH STREET
Go one block to INDIAN ROAD
INWOOD FIELD # 6 is a short walk into the park, just to the right hand
side of the Nature Center

Take the 'A' Train to the last stop - 207TH STREET
Walk several blocks west (towards New Jersey) until you get to SEAMAN
AVENUE
Make a RIGHT onto SEAMAN AVENUE until it ends at 218TH STREET (at this
point you should see Columbia University's football field straight
ahead)
Make a LEFT TURN onto 218TH STREET
Go one block to INDIAN ROAD
INWOOD FIELD # 6 is a short walk into the park, just to the right hand
side of the Nature Center

REGISTRATION FOR FALL BALL BEGINS NOW.

Currently registered (eligible) players will receive registration forms for our Fall season (the season generally runs about eight weeks, starting in early September, and includes three baseball divisions -- for ages 8 through 15). Registration is by mail only - your form must be postmarked by August 15.

20TH ANNIVERSARY PARTY

WSLL celebrated our 20th Anniversary on Friday, June 10. Many of our founding members returned to join current families in honoring Past Presidents Michael Orbison and Tatiana Hoover, Seniors Umpire John Williams, Girls' Softball founder Jean Schmidt, and Challenger League founder Barbara Jordan, for their invaluable contributions to the success of the League. Also recognized: Brett Kalikow, a senior at Riverdale, former WSLL player and founder of Homerun Hopefuls, for outstanding community service and sportsmanship; and the late Steve Fiore, founder of West Side Movers, a perenial sponsor of the League, whose support has meant so much to the League.

Thanks to Andrea Kretchmer, Eileen Kleiman, Carolyn DuHoffman, who labored tirelessly to organize the party.
